Datong, once a northern frontier fortress and one of nine ancient cities, now is a famous tourist hub. Your guide and driver will pick you up at your hotel or Datong railway station then drive to the Yungang Grottoes in about 40 minutes. It was built in 5th century with 254 grottoes and 51,000 stone sculptures that earned them a UNESCO World Heritage listing.
Located in the old city, the Huayan Temple was built nearly 1000 years ago and rebuilt several times. It is an artistic complex of ancient Chinese architecture, sculpture, fresco and inscription, as well as a cultural synthesis of religion and politics.
The 9 Dragon Screen, one of only three ceramic screens exist, is a beautiful piece of work. Serving as the evil-spirits-warkding-off wall, it is a treasure that Datong is extremely proud of.
The city wall, although like most of the city has been restored, is well worth going around. It is long and vast. You can see not only the old city but the new city.

9:10-11:30 After about 40 minutes drive, you will get to the one of the four top grottoes in China, Yungang Grottoes. It was built about 1000 years ago and listed as the UNESCO heritage in 2011. Yungang Grottoes - one of the largest stone caving art treasury famous both home and abroad, which was listed as a world heritage site in 2011. It was excavated along the mountain, imposingly stretching 1 kilometer with rich contents. Covering over 18,000 square meters engraving area, there are existing 45 main caves, 209 subsidiary caves, more than 1,100 niches, and more than 51,000 stone statues, among which the largest statue measures 17 meters and the smallest only 2 centimeters.
11:30-12:30 Have a chinese lunch.
12:30-13:30 Drive back to the old city.

14:30-15:30 Take a little walk to the 9 Dragon Screen.
15:30-16:30 Visit the City Wall. Walking on the restored wall, you can see the size of the wall and the old and new city is also show up.
