Overview

Datong, once a northern frontier fortress and one of nine ancient cities, now is a famous tourist hub. Your guide and driver will pick you up at your hotel or Datong railway station then drive to the Yungang Grottoes in about 40 minutes. It was built in 5th century with 254 grottoes and 51,000 stone sculptures that earned them a UNESCO World Heritage listing. After a lunch, continue to the Hengshan Hanging Temple which was built into the cliffs of Mount Heng over 1400 years ago. The temple is combination of three religions: Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. The Yingxian Wooden Tower, built in 1056, is a work of fine craftsmanship. It is the world's oldest wooden pagoda and has withstood earthquakes and and wars. After whole day visit, drive back to hotel or railway station.

Itinerary

Datong: Yungang Grottoes, Hanging Temple and Yingxian Wooden Tower

8:30- Guide and driver will meet you in your hotel lobby or the train station( the time will be proved by you) 

9:10-11:30 After about 40 minutes drive, you will get to the one of the four top grottoes in China, Yungang Grottoes. It was built about 1000 years ago and listed as the UNESCO heritage in 2011. Yungang Grottoes - one of the largest stone caving art treasury famous both home and abroad, which was listed as a world heritage site in 2011. It was excavated along the mountain, imposingly stretching 1 kilometer with rich contents. Covering over 18,000 square meters engraving area, there are existing 45 main caves, 209 subsidiary caves, more than 1,100 niches, and more than 51,000 stone statues, among which the largest statue measures 17 meters and the smallest only 2 centimeters.

11:30-12:30 Have a chinese lunch.

12:30-13:30 Hit on the road to the Hanging Temple.

13:30-15:00 Climb the Hanging TempleIt was built in 5th century on the side of cliff. The temple is combination of three religions: Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. Seeing it from the distance, you could find it hanging in the mid air miraculously, hence the name "Hanging Temple”. You really need courage to climb some narrow wooden stairs!

15:00-15:40 Drive to the Yingxian Wooden Tower.

15:40-16:40 Visit the Yingxian Wooden Tower.

18:00 We will drop you off at your hotel or the train station in the end.
